Every child will be visually literate and will be able to appreciate art from a personal, cultural and communicative point of view.


To increase pupils’ art literacy by providing platforms for pupils to appreciate the various cultural arts, through a dynamic student-centric curriculum.

Curriculum Framework


The aims of art education are to enable every child to be visually literate and to appreciate art from a personal, cultural and communicative point of view. (Based on MOE’s aims of Art Education in Singapore)

This curriculum framework focuses on developing pupils’ sensory awareness, imagination and visual inquiry skills to investigate their surroundings as subject matter. They also will acquire creative art-making skills that enable them to share their ideas, thoughts and feelings to those who are less literate in Art. Last but not least, they will acquire visual literacy skills that enable them to describe and interpret artworks from a variety of cultures and context, especially in Singapore, where it is multi-culturally rich.

With all that, pupils will be able to interpret, create and select images to convey ideas. Art beautifies our world, captures memories, communicates ideas, imparts values and evokes emotions. It also reflects cultures and beliefs. Discussing and learning about artworks made by different people provide avenues to develop our pupils’ understanding of cultures and different ways of thinking.

As pupils recognize the role of art and its relevance in their everyday life, they would begin to value art as an important component in our experiences.


To provide opportunities for students to use concepts and integrate skills and processes to appreciate and interpret art works around them and in turn produce art works of their own.

Elements of Art/ Principles of Design

By understanding the different elements of art and the basic principles of design, the pupils will have a basis to identify, interpret and evaluate art works before producing their own works.

Art forms/ Media

  • Art can occur in many art forms and media. By acquiring knowledge of these, pupils will be able to view different art forms or media from different angles and appreciate them from an artistic point of view.

Additional Programmes for P1-6

Additional programmes such as the level AMIS programmes, bi-annual art exhibitions and learning journeys are conducted to provide art experiences for pupils which they could not have in their daily lessons.

Bi-annual Art Exhibition

The bi-annual Art Exhibition aims to foster their self- con?dence and sense of achievement. It helps to engage students in the discussion and making of art. Students can also learn from one another and learn to value artworks made by their peers.

AMIS Programmes 2015

The programme is an MOE-initiative. However, by tapping on the funds from MOE, we tailor the programme to the needs of our pupils. By allowing them to experience the genres, the pupils are more aware of the different cultural arts around us. In addition, by tapping on professional art practitioners’ deep knowledge and experience in the Arts, they are an inspiration to our students. It also help students discover their talents and pursue their passion.

Learning Journeys

Different environments provide different sensory experiences for students. Therefore, with the help of learning journeys to different museums, art scenes etc., we can help our pupils to connect their learning with real life.

The planned learning journeys for the year 2015 are in the pipeline:
